The BIG BIKE Boom

Superbikes
While a majority of high rollers seem to be paying everincreasing sums of the green stuff to be seen stepping out of the swankiest international luxury cars, the young-atheart Indians are opting for a more exciting and active form of experiencing life on the road - on motorcycles. With the recent spate of international superbike launches, and a whole lot of manufacturers making a beeline for India, life in the fast lane is rapidly taking on a new meaning altogether.

Japanese giants

Bike-makers from Japan have had their feet in India for a long time now, but have started seeing potential for their performance bikes the country only now. First off the block was Yamaha India, which launched its international flagship superbike, the YZF-R 1, in December last year.

The acclaimed track-assault weapon can be seen competing in race form at the World Superbike Series, and having the same genes at work on Indian streets set the imagination of bike lovers across the country on fire. The 1000cc, 180PS machine features some of Yamaha's most advanced power-production-weightreduction wizardry. And it looks a million bucks too! Yours for Rs 10.5 lakh, exselect Yamaha showrooms across the country.

Not as stunning in terms of looks, but way more stunning in terms of straight-line performance is the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. Even though it has been launched in India very recently, the bike has been breaking drag-strip records (and competitors' hearts) for almost ten years now. The new generation 2008 model is arguably the biggest, baddest and the fastest hypersport production machine in the world (capable of a restricted top speed of 298 km/h), and Suzuki has played smartly to showcase its absolute best in India.

Italian eye-candy

On the heels of Yamaha came Italian sportbike maker Ducati, with its entire range of exotic beauties. Even though there were talks of the company tying up with some established Indian motorcycle maker to facilitate operations, it ended up joining hands with Precision motors Co., which is currently its sole dealer throughout the country.

Ducati has been responsible for consistently churning out some of the most desirable motorcycles, and its current line-up which is available in India has them all. From the naked V-twin powered Monster 696 (Rs 13.8 lakh ex-showroom ) at one end of the pricing spectrum, the stylish and attitude laden Hypermotard (Rs 18.2 lakh) somewhere in the middle, right up to the technologypacked race-ready WSB winning 1098R superbike (a whopping Rs 48 lakh exshowroom ) at the other end, the Italian exoticas are inarguably the most expensive set of twowheels on Indian roads. The upside is that they are also the most beautifully scultpted pieces of rolling art.

Presence machines

If high-performance fuelled adrenaline does not quite match your taste, there are international offerings which offer more laid-back and comfortable rides, but probably end up making larger style statements than most superbikes. At the forefront of this segment was the Yamaha MT-01 which was launched with the R1 back in December 2007. Its ridiculously large capacity 1670cc V-Twin engines a monstrous 150Nm of torque, but the true fortes of the bike are its grizzly, no-holds-barred looks and its rumble-roar exhaust note.

On similar lines, Suzuki will be launching its M1800R cruiser along with the Hayabusa, with dyed-inthe-wool custom chopper looks but characteristic Japanese technology in the engine underneath. It may not beat the Hayabusa, but it is plenty fast and once you factor in the heads it will turn wherever it goes, we bet it will be worth expect to turn heads everywhere you go with it.

The road ahead

Next-up down the big-bike road is Austrian motorcycle maker KTM, which will be exploiting its alliance with Bajaj Auto Ltd. to bring in its range of zany sport and street bikes to India early next year. Japanese bike maker Kawasaki will also hark back to its ties with Bajaj Auto for dealer and service support to bring down its own brand of Japanese mania. With three of the Japanese big four already clear about their big bike presence in India, Honda with its already established base here cannot be far away.

Since volumes are too low to even begin contemplating local production, all these bikes are being flown in as completely built-up units and prices are still off limits for the populace owing to figure-doubling duties on imports of this sort. Some may say that Indian infrastructure and traffic conditions are not suited for such high-performance machines, but that takes nothing away from the pride of ownership that they offer.

Things have never been better for those with enough fortunes to be able to afford these delectable two-wheeled machines, with completely legal ownership, service backup and loan schemes. These are, after all, some of the best bikes in the world, and if you can afford them, the time is ripe is switch to a more fulfilling and stimulating way of life on motorcycles.

HONDA CBF STUNNER

The CBF Stunner is here. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has unveiled its new 125 cc sports bike, the CBF Stunner, for the Indian market. It 11bhp at 8000rpm and 11nm of torque at 6500rpm. Honda claims the Stunner can achieve 60kmph from standstill in 5.2 seconds, which ought to make the Stunner one of the fastest 125cc motorcycles in India, if not the fastest.

Loaded with goodies like front and rear tubeless tyres, alloys, half fairing and stepped up seat, the CBF Stunner is the most beautiful and loaded 125cc motorcycle in India.

However all this comes at a price, the basic kick start drum brake version of Honda CBF Stunner would Rs. 47,070, while the self start drum brake version costs Rs. 49,820, while the top of the line disc brake version (with self start) would set you back by Rs. 51,655 (prices ex. showroom Delhi).

CBF Stunner motorcycles will be available in three vresions - Self Disc Alloy (Price Rs 51,655), Self Drum Alloy (Price: Rs 49,820) and Kick Drum Alloy (Price: Rs 47,070). At this point, Honda will offer the Stunner CBF in red, black, metallic silver and yellow colours.

Lookswise, you could call it a mini-Karizma. It looks like a well-put together package for sure. We think it looks the best in yellow, the bright colour nicely contrasting with the matte black handlebars and black front fairing.

Basic specifications of the Honda Stunner CBF are as follows:

125cc, 11 bhp
Kerb Weight: 129 kg
Wheelbase: 1271mm
Fuel tank capacity: 10 litres

Tubeless tryes
Front 80/100-17 and Rear: 100/90-77
Front Brakes: 240mm Disc or 130mm Drum
Rear Brake: 130mm drum

Starting: Kickstart / Electric

5 speed transmission
Trip meter

Honda claims acceleration figures of 0-60 kmph at 5.2 seconds for the CBF Stunner. Take it with a pinch of salt, the motorcycle weighs 129 kg, and even the iconic Yamaha RX 100 could not do that. It will be good, we are sure though. but the only problem with the bike is that the tachometer is missing.

honda stunner cbf motorcycle photo

Honda intends to sell 10 lakh motorcycles during 2008-2009 fiscal year, out of which the company expects 80,000 to be CBF Stunner motorcycles. Honda has priced the Stunner CBF bike between Rs 47,070 and Rs 51,655 (Ex-Showroom, Delhi).

Apart from the CBF Stunner, the company also has lined up measures to roll out two more new motorcycle models in 2008. Plus, there is an 800 cc motorcycle from Honda in the pipeline for India, though details are sketchy at this moment. We hear the 800 cc motorcycle would be priced above Rs 10 lakh, and that is real close the just-launched Suzuki Hayabusa.

Honda had posted sales figures of of 9.07 lakh units in the previous fiscal, aims at selling as many as 3 lakh motorcycles and 7 lakh scooters this fiscal.

The bike major which had plans to come up with a new manufacturing facility seems to have put such plans in the backburner and is focusing on improving sales. The company currently boasts of a production capacity of 1.2 million units.

Honda CBF Stunner comes in three variants. One of them is kick start, with drum brake and alloy wheels, which will have a launch price of Rs. 47,070. Then, there is the one that has self start, with drum brake and alloy wheels, launched at a price of Rs. 49,820. The top of the end, and third, model is self start, with disc brake and alloy wheels, which will have Rs. 51,655 as its launch price. All the prices are ex. showroom Delhi.Rs 58,000 as its launch price in Hyderabad.and company giving 60kmpl millage.

Pictures of Yamaha FZ16

Dubbed as “Lord of the Streets”, FZ16 is designed and engineered with the potential for active and even aggressive enjoyment of around-town street riding and styling that brings pride of ownership and makes any rider look like they own the road.

Unveiling FZ 16 during a select media tour for test ride at Goa, CEO and Managing Director, Mr. Tsutomu Mabuchi said, “With the launch of FZ 16, Yamaha is poised to provide Indian bike enthusiasts with both a rough and brutish expression as well as a certain subtlety. This high quality masterpiece will without doubt become a rage for the next generation”.

“Yamaha has always kept up with new technology while constantly bringing it to the next level. The bike gets its looks from the global FZ series known for awesome looks and tremendous power. Its engine packs a mighty punch and the light weight diamond type frame known for its simplicity and excellent rigidity- enables it to cut its way through the curves like a street-fighter. The FZ16 has a Don’t Mess with me attitude & takes attention away from others on the road as it makes its personality felt.

With the Triple Macho concept projecting the Muscular silhouette, Muscular body parts and Muscular chassis, FZ 16 is an object de’art on the street and reflects visual expression of performance. The bike boasts of a 153cc air-cooled, 4-stroke, single-cylinder high torque engine for active & aggressive city riding. The engine is born out of the quest for the ultimate in intake efficiency, combustion efficiency and minimum horsepower loss and its breathtaking pickup. The single-axis balancer reduces vibration for more comfortable riding. A negative pressure type Φ26mm carburetor with TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) contributes to outstanding engine response on the FZ16. The placement of this model’s ‘MidShip Muffler’ is toward the center of the machine to achieve good concentration of mass, exhaust efficiency and handling. While 5-speed transmission provides a smooth operational touch, the gear ratios are set to provide optimum performance and agility in city riding.

A Monocross suspension ensures agile running performance and handling. At the same time it inhibits machine bottoming while riding with a tandem passenger and provides a very comfortable ride. The front suspension is 41 mm thick, besides good absorption of shocks from the road, this suspension also provides good damping characteristics during acceleration and braking.

FZ 16 also has India’s first “140/60-17” size rear radial with a 60% aspect ratio contributes to better grip and handling stability. To achieve sufficient cooling effect, the cylinder head on the FZ16 engine is designed with especially large fins as well as a shroud (air intake cowl) to effectively direct airflow to the engine.

The FZ 16 will be offered in 3 colours namely Lava Red, Midnight Black and Flaming Orange. The bike will be priced at Rs. 65000 ex showroom (All India).

YAMAHA YZF R-125

Let me make one thing clear that Yamaha currently has no concrete plans for bringing this bike in India any time soon. The bikes that its bringing to India are YZF R1 and MT01.
The battle is between the Japs and a Taiwanese challenger Kymco for the best entry level sports bike in 125 cc. The segment had been dominated by Honda CBR125 in most of the markets around the world so far. But with the Yamaha YZF-R125 equations are about to change.

R-Series styling

MotoGP tech

Part 1 : Yamaha YZF-R125

This is the all-new 2008 Yamaha YZF-R125 motorcycle which will go head to head with the top-selling Honda CBR125R

The Yamaha YZF-R125 uses an all-new liquid-cooled 124cc, four-valve, short-stroke single cylinder engine, which is claimed to be the most powerful 125cc four-stroke motorcycle available. It has a six-speed gearbox and fuel injection, and a Yamaha YZF-R6 style stubby exhaust with twin catalysts is fitted.

A full size Deltabox beam frame is used to make the Yamaha YZF-R125 feel and ride closer to a full size bike than the Honda CBR125R, an aluminium ‘banana’ style swingarm, 33mm diameter forks and a 292mm brake disc/Brembo caliper and wide tyres complete the mini-sportsbike chassis.

The styling is close to the new 2008 Yamaha YZF-R6 – the short tail and aggressive looking twin headlight fairing are almost indistinguishable from the 600 at distance. Colours are blue/black, red/white, grey/black or yellow/black.

YAMAHA RAIDER 2OO8 1854CC V-TWIN POWERED CHOPPER

So if you noticed that the blog was not updated too frequently for past couple of weeks and wondered what the reason? Here it is.
Pictures of 2008 Yamaha Raider
I am in love with the 1854cc V-twin powered chopper-inspired 2008 Raider. So much so that i also built my custom Raider which will cost me $16,380 ( thats about $3000 worth of accessories over the base price). I cant afford to place the order right now, all i can do is just drool over.
Features of 2008 Raider:-

Engine:
  • 113-cubic-inch (1854cc) air-cooled, pushrod 48-degree V-twin pumps out max torque at just 2500 rpm and max power at 4500 rpm for powerful, relaxed cruising.
  • Four pushrod-activated valves and two spark plugs per cylinder provide optimum combustion efficiency along with classically beautiful engine architecture.
  • Plated cylinders and forged pistons cooled by oil jets provide outstanding reliability and long life. Twin counterbalancers keep things smooth but rumbly.
  • 9.48:1 compression ratio and aggressive cam timing increase power output across the board.
  • Computer-controlled, twin-bore, fuel injection monitors multiple engine parameters to calculate perfect mixture under all conditions; wide-angle 12-hole fuel injectors provide excellent atomization.
  • A 3.5-liter airbox is hidden in the area behind the fuel tank for great performance and a custom, airy look.
  • Two-into-one-into-two exhaust with Exhaust Ultimate Power valve (EXUP) inside boosts torque in the 2500-3500 rpm range.
  • Special custom-machining of the cooling fin edges gives a jewel-like appearance to the engine as light hits it from different angles.
Chassis/Suspension:
  • New design all-aluminum cast frame is light, rigid and tuned for light, athletic handling. A light, Controlled-Fill, aluminum swingarm casting complements the bike’s lithe style.
  • Low, sculpted seat holds the rider in place, and pullback bars reach back to enforce a casual, urban cruising style.
  • A 6-degree yoke angle—the first ever on a street-legal Star Motorcycle—makes it possible to achieve that custom look as well as natural handling and straight-line cruisability: 34-degree rake plus 6 degrees yoke angle gives total rake of 40 degrees and 102mm of trail, while bringing the fork closer to the steering axis.
  • Custom 5-spoke wheels carry a 120/70-21-inch bias tire up front, and a wide, 210/40-18 radial out back—the tallest and widest ever on a Star.
  • 46mm fork tubes serve up an excellent ride and a sweet appearance through 5.1 inches of wheel travel.
  • A tucked-out-of-sight single shock out back provides a smooth ride under varying loads.
  • New seamless fuel tank carries a full 4.1 gallons of fuel.
  • Front brake master cylinder with integrated lever operates a pair of 298mm front discs squeezed by strong monoblock calipers for excellent power and feel, with a 310mm disc out back.
  • Strong, light and narrow belt final drive contains embedded carbon fiber for even greater strength.
  • Wiring harness uses lightweight AVSS wires, and switchgear wiring is routed inside the handlebar for a clean appearance.
Additional Features:
  • Left-thumb operated high-beam switch, and right-thumb activated accessory driving light switch for great visibility.
  • Jewel-like fit and finish, and Star quality paint, chrome and attention to detail are evident all over the Raider.
  • Cool, tank-mounted instrumentation complements the custom look, and contains analog speedometer and fuel gauge, along with twin digital tripmeters, odometer and self-diagnostics.
  • Bright multi-reflector headlight, LED taillight and amber turn signals behind clear lenses give a custom look.
  • Oxygen sensor and three-way catalyst reduce emissions.
“S” model gets even more chrome: chrome triple clamps, fork sliders, air box cover, headlight housing, handlebar risers, etc.

YAMAHA FZ150 LAUNCH IN NOVEMBER 2008

Yamaha FZ 150 motorcycle will debut in India in later half of 2008 at an expected price of Rs 90,000 and Rs 70,000 on-road Delhi.

Yamaha FZ 150 motorcycle India photo

After the big news of the upcoming launch of the Yamaha YZF-R15, almost nothing else seems worth waiting for – and then you see the Yamaha FZ 150 cc motorcycle. You can see the official photo f the FZ 150 above - you know what I am talking about.

More than a decade back, I rode around on the streets f Mumbai, shit-scared, on a BMW F650 Funduro. The bike cost more than Rs 4 lakhs, and was an unqualified disaster when it came to sales. But it had a stance which reminded Mumbaikars of a stallion. Crowds gathered wherever I parked it.

The Yamaha FZ revealed for the first time at Auto Expo 2008 – they call it a prototype – reminded me of the F650 with its color scheme and upright stance. But the FZ looks more modern for sure. Yamaha says that the FZ 150 is just a prototype. Nobody in the motoring press believes them. Chances are, this 150 cc air-cooled motorcycle will make it into production towards the end of 2008.

You have basically the same engine as the YZF-R15 Yamaha on the Yamaha FZ 150, but this is more a road-and-track motorcycle than the YZF, which has racing pretensions even in the 150 cc guise.

yamaha FZ 150 photo

So what you have is a motorcycle that will take on the Pulsars directly, and will tempt the owners of the regular econo-miser 150 cc motorcycles. The Yamaha FZ 150 will have a 5-speed gearbox which will put some 16-18 bp on the road – enough to become the performance 150cc king. The expected price (absolutely unconfirmed, and based on rumors, etc etc) is Rs 70,000 on-road in Delhi.

One advice: If you can hold on to your motorcycle purchase decision for a while, do so till you hear about the YZF R15 and the FZ from Yamaha. They might both be path-breaking motorcycles in India, and you don't want to feel bad about not buying them. Wait for a bit, it'll be worth it.

TVS GOING TO LAUNCH 125CC FLAME

tvs-125cc-flame.jpg

TVS 125cc Flame:

Out of the seven TVS launches, this is the hottest launch not only for the sake of name - the flame. This 125cc bike which replaces the 125cc victor, has already triggered fire between the India’s top two wheeler manufacturer. Bajaj Auto has decided to sue TVS Motor for infringement of its patented engine technology. Bajaj Auto claims that TVS has used its digital twin spark ignition technology (DTSi) in recently unveiled TVS’s 125cc bike Flame.

Design and features:

Flame sports a new design and embraces the contemporary black theme. Flame borrows the headlamp, front fender, attractive rear view mirrors, body coloured shock absorber springs and special engine cowl from its big brother apache. TVS says that the styling of the Flame is inspired by the Delta wing design found in the latest fighter jets. So, it has adopted a triangular (DeltaEdge) design theme to many of the Flame’s features.TVS 125cc Flame is packed with exciting features like attractive body graphics, alloy wheels, disc brake at the front, electric start and handle bar weights to control vibrations.

CC-VTi engine:

flame_125cc_tvs_ccvti_engine1.jpg TVS which used VTi(Variable Timing Ignition) engine for its economic bike ‘centra’ now developed a more sophiscated engine for the new 125cc flame. 125cc Flame sports the india’s first three-valve CC VTi (controlled combustion variable timing intelligent) engine. The engine’s produces maximum power of 10.5 bhp at 8,250 rpm. Comparing the figures flame 125cc leads over the Honda shine, suzuki zeus, hero Honda splendour, hero honda Glamour but trails to yamaha gladiator and Bajaj discover 125cc atleast in the paper. TVS developed the new engine for the 125cc flame in collaboration of AVL of australia Similar to the Bajaj’s DTSi, flames CC-VTi engine hosts two spark plugs which are located at opposite ends of the combustion chamber. CC-VTi engine is breathing and expelling through 3 valves (first time a 125cc motorcycle featuring 3 valves). The engine features two different intake ports called swirl port and power port. The swirl port creates a swirl motion of the intake air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, thereby leading to a more efficient burning of lean air-fuel mixture and helping improve the bike’s fuel efficiency. In the power throttle mode, the power port opens to allow a high flow rate of the air-fuel mixture to deliver high power.

According to TVS, the styling of 125cc flame is inspired by Delta wing design found in fighter jet. This innovative and futuristic aerodynamic stying what TVS terms as ‘deltaedge’ will help the 125cc flame slice through the wind like fighter jets. Flame’s exciting dual tonecolours and graphics makes it irrestible. The 125cc Flame boast several styling elements such as deltaedge headlamps, tank embedded deltaedge trafficators, LCD digital speedometer, dual lens tailamp and a sporty deltaedge exhaust. 125cc Flame’s styling elements has some practicality too

* 125cc Flame’s tank embedded clear lens indicators will help you save the indicators in traffic. if a thought for the rear(indicators) is also given it could be more useful.

* First time a 125cc bike features LCD digital speedometer. TVS 125cc flame feature an analogue speedometer but other gauges such odometer, digital clock, fuel gauge, mileage meter are embedded in the digital console. No rpm meter or tachometer for this 125cc flame.

* 125cc flame’s dual lens tailamp will loot the exclusivity from karizma owners.

* Though TVS says deltaedge headlamp is to provide more aerodynamic efficiency, the front cowl looks thinner which does not reflect bike’s chracters. Trouble for 150cc Hero Honda cbz xtreme and Honda’s unicorn owners too a 125cc bike features similar styled headlamp.

* 125cc Flame’s sporty deltaedge exhaust is not just styling element but also to deliver the smoothest of sounds, lowest emissions and excellent performance.

YAMAHA TO DEVELOP ENGINES WITH BAJAJ

This would be easily, one of the biggest marriage in Indian automotive history. India’s 2nd largest bike maker and worlds’ pronounced may jointly develop engines of superbikes in India. Few months ago it was rumoured that Yamaha’s head visited one of the Bajaj’s plant. This seems to be true, Yamaha will rope in Bajaj as its local partner and pump in Rs 500 crore over the next two years for its new entity in india. The new joint venture company will use one of the Bajaj’s plant to create a common engine platform for high-end bikes. Through this venture Bajaj will get access to latest technolgies and Yamaha will use its Bajaj’s large vendor base and in turn this would help the japanese maker to keep the check on input costs. Yamaha may also avail of this opportunity to outsource critical components from India for its operations across the world. It is important to recall Bajaj has already a similar agreement with Japanese bike maker Kawasaki and austrian motorcycle maker KTM. However, It remains to be seen though how the things out. Obviously few questions pops-up? Whether this joint venture will be confined to contract manufacturing? what will be the equity structure in the new venture? Will Bajaj sell yamaha’s superbikes? We have to wait for some more time.

YAMAHA ENGINES

Engines

When it comes to deciding on power options for your new or used boat, there are many factors to consider . . . 2-stroke or 4-sroke, how fast you want to go, who will service it, reliability, fuel efficiency, the list goes on. When making that decision, we feel the most important consideration is RELIABILITY. Ironically, when asked questions about engines, this is rarely brought up. It seems to be assumed that whatever engine is bought, it will be reliable. This is simply not always so.

Here at Shipyard, we have sold many Yamaha engines for both new and used boats. Those who buy them want a reliable engine . . . one that will start, stay running, run hard for hours, fish for even more, and then get them back home again -- CONSISTENTLY. We have also seen that Yamaha is, by far, the predominant outboard used in saltwater. Why? Not because they are the cheapest but because they are quite simply the most RELIABLE - period.

Yamaha manufactures a full line of both two-stroke and four-stroke engines. Four strokes for those who want the clean, quiet, fuel-efficient performance of the fastest growing outboard motor category. Two strokes for those whose priority is lightning-quick, hold-onto-your-hat acceleration (redefined by their revolutionary HPDI - High Pressure Direct Injection). Year after year, Yamaha leads the way in both two strokes and four strokes, with more accolades and awards than anyone in the market, most recently including:

  • the J.D. Powers and Associates Customer Satisfaction Award - 2008

  • the Marine Industry CSI award - 6 years running

This recognition is exceptional. They've proven their determination "to produce the most trusted outboards on the planet", using the most innovative marine technology with industry firsts such as the microcomputer ignition, breakthrough corrosion protection, the high-thrust four-stroke counter-rotating props, the first electronic fuel injection (rivaling the automotive EFI), high pressure direct injection, and Command Link digital information technology. They also introduced the world’s first V6 four-stroke outboard, and the first two-stroke HPDI which injects fuel at an amazing 1,000psi. In 2004, the 300 horsepower HPDI was introduced, and this year Yamaha introduced the world's first V8 5.3 liter four stroke outboard with the F350.

Yamaha owners have learned to expect innovations that bring them outboards that are smaller, lighter, faster, more powerful, and more fuel efficient. Shipyard Island Marina is proud to offer the full line of Yamaha outboard motors and parts. Please browse the new engines we have in inventory and our specials.

ELECTRICAL SCOOTERS IN INDIA

Electric scooters were only rumoured about in India when I gave up riding two-wheelers in India. They were just a nice dream then. Plug in, charge up and ride away. Easy as that.

One of the first things I look for when I hear about any new electric vehicle - in India or abroad, two wheelers or four wheelers - is the range offered per charge. It has always disappointed. Even abroad, pure electric vehicles that can give you a substantial range on electric charge and battery packs are few.

However, seems there really IS a market for electric scooters in India. There are launches happening everywhere, press conferences to announce upcoming electric scooters with slightly better range than before and generally a lot of interest in the buying public too.

Today, I heard about the latest electric scooter which was announced - the EKO EV-60 electric scooter. For me, that was that much-heard of straw that broke the camel’s back. And here I am, trying to write about a topic which I had stayed away from for a very long time.

Scooter manufacturers are now furiously launching electric scooters to provide cost-effective alternatives to customers that are bearing the brunt of rising fuel prices. Most of them claim that the cost of running two-wheelers are less than Rs 1 per km. Two-wheeler players like EKO Vehicle, TVS, Indus Elec-Trans, Global Automobiles, Vijaya Value Electric, and Ultra Motors have launched eco-friendly electric scooters even as they plan to up manufacturing capabilities.

TVS Scooty Teenz Electric

TVS has launched its first electric scooter, the TVS Sc

ooty Teenz electric scooter, that generates an average range of 40 km, for nine hours of charge. This can increase by fifty percent if the rider opts for lower speeds by using a unique feature of this electric bike, the range selector. The range selector allows the rider to select a preferred range, either high or low. The TVS Scooty Teenz also throws in a low charge indicator, storage space, and a mobile charger. The TVS Scooty Teenz has a 800W permanent magnet BLDC motor, a VRLA battery, and a CI and CV charger.

The TVS Scooty Teenz electric scooter is priced at Rs 37,425. The TVS Scooty Teenz is targeted at young women who need to travel approximately 15-25 kms per day.

Ultra Motor Marathon, Velociti and Optima electric scooters

In the high-end segment, Ultra Motors launched the Marathon electric scooter, on July 29 2008, priced at Rs 31,047 (US$ 730.688) ex-showroom. Ultra Motors claims that Marathon can travel 100 Kms on a single charge. The Marathon has an SLA Battery and a 48V / 24 AH battery capacity. That 100 km range makes it a very practical option indeed.

The highest range for an electric scooter in India

- the Ultra Motors Marathon?

Ultra Motors says that its Velociti and Optima electric two-wheelers that it launched in April 2008, have already sold around 300 units so far in India, and is an indicator of the demand for electric scooters. Velociti has a 50 km charge range with a top speed of 40 km/hr. For most small towns in India, that is an adequate speed.

Ultra Motors says that the Velociti’s running costs are 10 paise per km, that is almost 1/10th of petrol two wheelers.

The Velociti electric two-wheeler has an 48V / 24 AH SLA Battery, BDLC motor, charge indicator, hydraulic disc brakes, and front and rear reflectors. The Optima offers a range of 70 km per charge and a maximum speed of 25km per hour. Both, Marathon and Velociti use impulse inertia technology that gives it higher speed of 40 km/h. The Velociti and Optima electric two-wheelers are priced at Rs 34,000 and Rs 29,000, respectively.

EKO Vehicle EV60 electric scooter and Cosmic

EKO vehicles plans to launch its EV60 electric scooter in September 2008 in India. The EKO EV60 electric scooter will be priced at Rs 39,600, and is the second electric scooter, after Cosmic, from the EKO stable. EKO vehicles says that EKO electric scooters will have a 10-15 minute rapid charging system, set up at select parking lots in cities and towns in India, that will replenish 85-90 percent of the battery capacity of a 20AH power pack.

Quickest charging for electric scooters in India - 15 minues!

The EKO Cosmic electric scooter provides a speed of 40 km/hr and a 40 - 50 km/charge range. The battery recharge time for the EKO Cosmic is 4 - 6 hours. The company claims that EKO vehicles cost Rs 0.08 per Km as opposed to petrol scooters that cost Rs 1/km.

YoSmart electric scooter

YoSpeed electric scooter from Indus

Indus Elec-Trans’ launched its YOSpeed electric scooter in March 2008. The YOSpeed has a BLDC hub 750W motor, maximum speed of 45km/hr, and a charging time of 6 to 8 hours. The Indus YOSpeed has, 33AH batteries, powerful headlamp, tail lamp, blinkers and a sari guard for the pillion rider.

The YOSpeed provides a range of 75 - 80 km for 70kg and 55 - 60 km for 135 kg. The company claims that the YOSpeed runs 500 kms for Rs 50 and the battery will run for 20,000 kms. Indus Elec-Trans’ YOSpeed is priced at Rs 36,650.

Luminous upcoming electric scooter

Power Technologies plans to launch four electric scooter models; two in September 2008 and two by 2010. The four Luminous models will be priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 45,000.

Vijaya Glide 25 and Glide 25 Super electric scooters

Glide 25 super electric scooter

Glide 25 Super electric scooter

Vijaya Value Electric range of battery powered scooters include Glide 25 and Glide 25 Super. Glide 25 has a top speed of 25kms/hr and can cover 40-50 kms per charge with a charging duration of 5-6 hours. Glide 25 has 48 V Sealed maintenance free battery, and power consumption of 1 KWH for full charge.

The Glide 25 Super is an upgraded version of Glide 25 that has the same top speed and charging time as the Glide 25. Though, the Glide 25 Super can cover 70-75 kms per charge and a higher load capacity of 90 Kgs.

Well, that’s about it for now. If you plan to buy an electric scooter, do tell us what you have in mind, and why you want to go for that particular model.

I would also encourage you to leave comments, and questions if any. If we are not accurate in any of the details of the elctric scooters, do correct us.

COLORFUL ELECTRICAL SCOOTERS

Yamaha Motor plans to launch scooters

Yamaha Motor India (YMI), a fully-owned subsidiary of the $12-billion Japanese auto major Yamaha Motor Company, plans to foray into the fast growing automatic scooter segment.
Yamaha, which has several scooter models, ranging from 110 cc to 400 cc, is evaluating the right segment to foray into the Indian market. YMI managing director and CEO Tomotaka Ishikawa told ET, “We will enter the scooter market but are yet to finalise the segment and the products. Once we introduce our new range of bikes in early 2008, we will concentrate on the right kind of scooter for the Indian market. We plan to hit the premium segment first and target customers who prefer to go for style and power rather than use scooters for their commuting needs.”
The company is likely to introduce its automatic range of scooters with dual disc brakes and twin-shock chassis with high-powered liquid cooled engines in the premium segment. It may also hit the entry-level segment with its fuel-injected 125 cc four-stroke engine and compact-sized urban scooters. YMI has already commissioned a market survey to determine different volume generating scooter segments in India.
Yamaha Majesty 400 Motoscooter

“We will have India-specific products, though our high-powered range in Europe and sub-150 cc Asian models could also be considered. We will bring new and better features in our scooters with comfortable suspension which will meet high safety standards,” Mr Ishikawa said.
As part of its Rs 1,000-crore restructuring plan, YMI will increase its portfolio from the current three bikes it sells in the domestic market. While its high powered 150 cc to 250 cc scooters will hit the urban markets, the 100 cc to 125 cc scooters will target smaller cities and towns.
With a slew of launches in different segments, Yamaha is aiming to dent the scooter market which has remained positive despite the slump in two wheeler sales. While motorcycle sales, which forms 85% of the market, has fallen by 15%, scooters sales grew by 20% to 5.30 lakh units in the first half of this fiscal.
YMI will compete with Japanese arch-rival Honda Motorcycle & Scooter, which commands a 50% marketshare while TVS Motors and Hero Honda also sell a significant number. Recently Suzuki Motorcycles India and Kinetic Motor Company have also joined the fray by launching new scooters in the 125 cc segment while the Ludhania-based Hero Cycles has also introduced a wide range of electric scooters in technical collaboration of Ultra Motors of UK.
